Azaiba Storefront Signboard

A sculpted, backlit signboard and shopfront for a retail store in Azaiba, Muscat — taken from design through installation.

Azaiba, Muscat, Oman

The finished storefront at dusk — a cream relief panel with a backlit Arabic calligraphic logo above a full-height glass shopfront.

Overview

A new storefront and signboard for a retail shop in Azaiba, Muscat. In a street of standard shopfronts, the sign itself had to be the facade’s main feature.

The challenge

The sign has to work twice a day. In daylight it needs to read as solid, crafted architecture; after dark it has to glow without looking like a cheap lightbox. It also had to be built and installed on a live street frontage.

Approach

  • A relief instead of a lightbox. A cream panel carved with flowing lines carries the calligraphic logotype, so the sign reads as part of the building.
  • Light from within. Concealed backlighting picks out the letterforms and the carved grooves, and a line of warm string lights frames the glazed entrance.
  • A simple base. A full-height glass shopfront keeps the ground floor open and puts the products on display.

Outcome

The photographs follow the job from scaffolding to opening. The lighting was tested at night with the scaffolding still in place, so it could be adjusted before handover. The finished facade carries the shop’s identity both day and night.

Key learnings

  • Test lighting on site, at night, before the scaffolding comes down.
  • A signboard designed as architecture lasts longer, visually, than one added later.
